Keni captures raw emotion like no other—the 19-year-old starlet has a natural ability to create vivid and impassioned stories, emblematic of her wisdom. Equal parts romantic and heartbreaking, her latest single “Sid and Nancy” is crafted with the most precise attention and sagacity of what it’s like to yearn for a duly devoted relationship. Bittersweet at its core, the track evokes to a T what it’s like to be young and crave a love so imprudently grandiose it blurs your vision of reality.
Deeply emotive and arguably reckless, Keni renders herself a nuanced lyricist by frankly sharing her innermost inclinations—something that makes her songwriting feel innately intimate. “Sid and Nancy” is Keni’s study of what it’s like to navigate the overwhelming sea of emotions that accompany pining for an ambitiously-bold love.
“I always used to take inspiration for my songs from movies and TV shows because I just didn’t think I had any experiences that were worth writing about. When I wrote “Sid and Nancy”, the only thing I knew about love was that I wanted it,” shares Keni. “The intention with this song was not to romanticize a toxic relationship like the one Sid and Nancy had, but to use that as a metaphor for that obsessive, can’t live without each other type of love that I was desperately seeking during a certain time. This is really the first song I wrote based [on] personal experience so it’s super special to me.”
Undeniably cinematic, the track is an authentic showcasing of the LA-based musician’s star-power, and confirms that this is only the beginning for Keni. Accompanying the track is a wildly witty music video directed by Aerin Moreno featuring Keni going through the motions of her interpretation of what it means to fall in love with a seemingly unsightly pig-head. Keni’s profound insights exhibit her passion for song-making and her talent is one we can’t wait to continue to see rise. Stream “Sid and Nancy” below!
