Without taking themselves too seriously, the Vancouver duo that goes by Doohickey Cubicle makes some pretty cool music.
The shimmering guitar, saxophone licks, female vocalist, nonsensical lyrics and the jazzy feel that amount to the song “Milano Sport” off their debut album Don’t Fix Anything is a fresh take on lo-fi and synth pop, and their music definitely deserves a spot in your playlist.
The song is bright and pensive. The guitar chords pair so nicely with vocalist Francis Hooper’s falsetto tone, and it provides an easy listening experience that is soft on the ears yet musically stimulating and definitely ~vibey~.
I see the duo as a cross between artists like Khruangbin, Tame Impala and Mac Demarco- three of the biggest ‘indie’ artists on the scene. I am fully convinced that Doohickey Cubicle deserves a spot on the same pedestal, and I know that they will be receiving more well-deserved attention in months to come.
Enjoy “Milano Sport” and the rest of the album. It’s truly a great project, with different motifs and moods littered throughout. If you’re a fan of dreamy indie music, Doohickey Cubicle just might be your new favorite band.
