Ella Rosa Q&A

With fervent vocals that command an audience’s attention, British artist Ella Rosa paints the most beautiful of stories with nothing but the rise and fall of her voice. Back with a new single, this time Ella covers Sting’s, “Englishman in New York,” transforming it into something fresh while still keeping its original roots. We had the chance to speak with Ella about this new release, how she got her start in music, and more, so sit back, relax, and get to know Ella Rosa!

Meghan: For our readers who are unfamiliar with Ella Rosa, take a moment to introduce yourself!
Ella Rosa: Sure. Well I am Ella Rosa and I’ve been living in LA for about two years now after moving from London by way of New York City. I’m really looking forward to sharing my music with you guys and sharing a little more about my story.

Meghan: As a child, was music a big thing in your home? If so, is there a specific song that you can recall being taken with?
Ella Rosa: My mom used to tell me that I would stay in my room from a really young age for about four hours just listening to my CD player on my silly little headphones. I’m about always inviting my friends over for play dates just to show them the new cities that I would got. I had three in heavy rotation: Amy Winehouse ‘Frank’, Elvis Presley ‘An Afternoon in the Garden’, The Police ‘Reggatta de Blanc’ and Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong ‘ Ella and Louis.’

Meghan: What was your first step/introduction with music?
Ella Rosa: My granddad was into classical music and theater and he would always show me really incredible Opera arias – I would say that was my first real interaction with Music. After becoming kind of obsessed with opera and classical in general I branched out into more
popular music and stars like Britney Spears and Rihanna became my absolute idols. From there I started learning how to sing and the basics of music theory.

Meghan: Congratulations on the release of “Englishman in New York.” I know this is a cover of Sting’s iconic track, so what made you choose to record this and add this onto your upcoming EP?
Ella Rosa: It’s funny because this was one of the songs that I listen to when I was very young, and it took on a whole new meaning when I moved to New York City at the age of 11. I never actually knew how to articulate the differences in culture between the UK and the US, but
Sting summed up perfectly for me. I also was super obsessed with the little jazz breakdown in the song.

Meghan: There’s an EP in the works, but is there anything else listeners an expect from 2021?
Ella Rosa: I’m definitely excited to share this EP as it’s a huge step forward for me and the collaborators. I could not be more excited for shows and we are in rehearsals at the moment to be fully prepared when they are back.

Meghan: What pushes you to create? What drives you as an artist?
Ella Rosa: That’s a really good question as there’s definitely no other driving force in my life aside from music. When I was younger I had a really hard time with learning in the school system and the only thing I could really excel at and focus on was music. In my life, there’s nothing more consistent than music and its abilities to com/excite/rejuvenate me. I really look forward to the moment where I have a big enough voice that I can influence other young females to create in all areas of the music industry.

Meghan: For anyone interested in pursuing music, what would you say to them?
Ella Rosa: I would tell people who want to pursue music to take advice from the people you trust and respect. Work hard with your head down and as cliché as it sounds, always strive for that better song. Oh and be kind to and help others! I don’t believe this game can be won alone—collaboration is key.

Meghan: What do you hope people take away from listening to your music?
Ella Rosa: I think people get different vibes depending on the person but at the very least I would want people to feel excited and recharged.

Meghan: To finish this off, do you have a message for your listeners? And do you have a message for people who have yet to discover Ella Rosa?
Ella Rosa: I’m really happy you’re here. Please always keep in touch as I read every single one of my DM’s and love to talk to people around the world.
