Viji is the latest big thing coming out of the banger factory Dirty Hit Records over in London. With a stacked roster featuring some of the most promising young talents in the scene (No Rome, Beabadoobee, The Japanese House) Viji is just another amazing signing for the team. Most recently, I was able to cover her single, “Suck It,” which is the title track and leading single for her EP, Suck It, which was released last night. Luckily, every expectation I had for this debut was met.
With 5-tracks and a runtime of just over 15 minutes long, Viji completely smashes this EP and highlights her ability to truly become a big-time artist. The alt-rock tones on this record are gritty and raw (words I use far too often) but truly emphasize this nature of angst and subtle rebellion that Viji brings out. Crushing guitars, big drums, and thudding bass all propel the star’s more sweet voice to the top of the mix and create a beautiful package of variety.
After opening the EP with the title track, we delve into another alt-rock tune with “Blind” that hits many of the same much-appreciated notes of the first record. With the same edge and angst, Viji brings forward an even better ear-worm of a chorus. The instrumental here is calmer and stripped which allows the chorus to shine all the brighter. As the chorus wanes, “I watched you fall headfirst / every day” it is impossible to not nod along.
As the EP reaches its mid-point we get the more stripped, calm, and sweet, “Angel.” It is here that Viji allows her falsetto to glimmer at the top of the mix while continuing to delve into this alternative space. With the most sincere writing on the project, VIjhi echoes, “angel / do you still think about me? / Is that why you fell into my dream?” The vocal processing on this record gives a new taste of lo-fi sounds that hit the ears with a sound that glimmers golden. All of this to be further amplified by a tasteful guitar solo that will send the record straight to the heartstrings.
From top to bottom, Suck It, is one of the more promising EP’s I’ve been early on in quite some time. Viji can truly do it all and there is no mistaking that Dirty Hit has found another star-in-the-making. Make sure you don’t miss out on this one because Viji is here to stay and to make herself a name you’ll be hearing plenty this next year.
