Shmissy / The Perception

Overflowing with spacey 808’s, bouncy percussive elements, and an entrancing vocal performance, Shmissy’s the perception takes listeners on an ethereal journey through space and time. A short EP with a span of just under six minutes, the project consists of two songs: “dark stout” and “a state of clarity and calmness.” Both tracks offer something unique, yet there is a level of cohesiveness between them that makes for a smooth back to back listen.

The 20-year-old Virginia Beach native fell love with music at a young age, but it wasn’t until 2017 when he began experimenting in the digital audio workspace, Logic Pro X. Shmissy’s songwriting naivete didn’t last long, as his trial and error naturally transformed into the composition of fully fleshed out songs. Soon after meeting his business partner and producer Palace Hill in 2019, Shmissy began to grasp a signature sound. After two years of working together, Shmissy and Hill have delivered us their most potent collaborative work to date,.

It comes as no surprise that Shmissy draws inspiration from legends such as Solange, Partynextdoor, Blood Orange, and his current favorite artist, Frank Ocean. The young creative has a humble yet confident presence about him, and a clear vision for how he wants to grow with his audience. Shmissy has leant us some insight into this vision stating that, “I plan on building my discography kinda like a relationship really, like… You know how in the beginning it’s all genuine smiles and fun — not giving the other person enough room to show all there is to them. You begin to see the person’s flaws, traumas, their weird side, their bad side, growth and all.”

If you vibe with this EP as much as I do, you’re going to to want to tap in with Shmissy on socials @shmissssy and keep your eyes peeled for release announcements in the near future. As always, I’ve dropped the EP and accompanying visual below, so make sure to check it out and let us know what you think! Peace!
