EJ SAFTNER: HOW ARE YOU TODAY?

EMMY MELI: I’M DOING GREAT TODAY, IT’S MY DAY OFF! THANK YOU FOR ASKING!

EJ: YOU HAVE AN INTERESTING INSTAGRAM BIO – “I BLEED AND RECORD IT SO THE WORLD FEELS LESS ALONE.” HERE’S A TWO-PART QUESTION – COULD YOU TELL ME ABOUT WHAT BREAKS YOUR HEART? DOES SONGWRITING MEND THAT BROKENNESS OR DOES IT AMPLIFY IT?

EMMY: YES, SO MY INSTAGRAM BIO IS A BIT OF A HEAD TILT TOWARDS HOW  I FEEL ABOUT MUSIC. I TAKE MY PAIN AND PUT IT INTO MUSIC SO  PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING THROUGH SIMILAR THINGS DON’T FEEL SO  LONELY IN THEIR STRUGGLES. I WRITE ABOUT THE THINGS THAT  BREAK MY HEART BECAUSE I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THINGS WITH  SUBSTANCE – ALL MY LYRICS HAVE A DEEP MEANING WITH A  MESSAGE THAT I BELIEVE NEEDS TO BE HEARD. MANY THINGS  BREAK MY HEART, SADLY. THE STATE OF THE WORLD, THE STATE OF  HUMANITY… IT KEEPS ME AWAKE AT NIGHT. I’M TRYING TO BRING MORE ATTENTION TO THAT. I HAVE A LOT OF INTERNAL SHIT I’M  WORKING THROUGH, FAMILY STUFF. SOME DEEP CHILDHOOD  WOUNDS THAT NEED HEALING. I WRITE A LOT ABOUT THAT TOO. I  KNOW THERE ARE KIDS OUT THERE WHO COME FROM A SIMILAR  SITUATION AS ME. I WOULD SAY WRITING SONGS AND MAKING  MUSIC MENDS ME. IT’S MY FORM OF MEDITATION, I GET TO GO  SOMEWHERE ELSE WHEN I SING. I’M NOT SURE WHERE I GO BUT  IT’S DEFINITELY NOT HERE. IT TRULY HEALS ME TO HELP PEOPLE.

EJ: TELL ME ABOUT “I AM WOMAN.” WHAT IS THE STORY OF THE SONG? HOW DID YOU WRITE IT?

EMMY:  FUNNY STORY ABOUT THE SONG… I SORT OF HAVE THESE WEIRDLY PROPHETIC DREAMS. MY DAD GETS THEM, I GUESS HE PASSED THEM DOWN TO ME. BUT ONCE I STARTED LISTENING TO THEM, SHIT  STARTED TO REALLY REALLY TURN AROUND FOR ME. CALL IT INTUITION, IF YOU WILL. I HAD A DREAM OF THIS BLACK CAT I FOUND, AND I KEPT TRYING TO PICK HER UP AND PET HER BUT SHE KEPT SCRATCHING ME AND BASICALLY TELLING ME TO FUCK OFF. IN THE  MORNING I REMEMBERED THE DREAM SO VIVIDLY I LOOKED IN  THIS BIG DREAM SYMBOLISM BOOK AND IT ACTUALLY HAD A WHOLE  SECTION ON BLACK CATS WITH THEIR ACTIONS REPRESENTING DIFFERENT THINGS. APPARENTLY, A BLACK CAT SCRATCHING AT YOU MEANS YOU NEED TO APPRECIATE YOUR FEMININE SIDE AND EMBRACE YOUR INNER DIVINITY; STEP INTO THE SHOES THAT YOU’VE ALWAYS HAD IF YOU WILL. SO, I LISTENED. I STARTED  WRITING THESE LITTLE MANTRAS FOR MYSELF EVERY MORNING AND  LIVING BY THEM. I THOUGHT WOMEN DESERVED TO FEEL THE WAY I  FELT WHEN I STARTED TO LOVE MYSELF, SO ONE DAY I JUST PUT  THEM TO MUSIC. THUS, “I AM WOMAN” WAS BORN.

EJ: IF YOU COULD PICK OUT ONE LINE OF “I AM WOMAN” TO SUMMARIZE THE TRACK, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

EMMY:  IT WOULD BE “I AM FEMININE, I AM MASCULINE, I AM ANYTHING I WANT.” I’M A SAGITTARIUS, SO I HAVE A LOT OF THAT DUAL-ENERGY WHICH I USED TO BE EMBARRASSED ABOUT UNTIL I REALIZED IT WAS A GIFT. IT MAKES ME A BADASS. I ALSO STRUGGLE WITH PCOS WHICH A LOT OF WOMEN ALSO HAVE, BUT HAVING AN IMBALANCE OF  HORMONES GROWING UP CAUSED A LOT OF WACK SHIT IN MY BODY, AND AS A YOUNG GIRL HAVING THE MASS AMOUNTS OF ACNE I HAD  DUE TO THAT REALLY SUCKED. I CLEARED MY SKIN AND GOT ON  MEDS AND HEALED MY BODY FROM THE INSIDE OUT, AND I’M  FEELING BEAUTIFUL IN MY SKIN NOW. BUT THERE WERE A COUPLE OF  MAJOR PERSONAL FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THAT LINE. AND  WHETHER YOU IDENTIFY AS A WOMAN OR NOT, I WANTED TO  EMPHASIZE YOU CAN BE ANYTHING YOU WANT AND THAT’S PRETTY  DAMN COOL.

EJ: WHAT IS ON THE TOP OF YOUR BUCKET LIST?

EMMY: THE TOP OF MY BUCKET LIST IS DEFINITELY TO TRAVEL THE WORLD. I WANT TO GO ON TOUR, MEET AND INSPIRE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE.  SHARE LOVE ONSTAGE, AND GIVE PEOPLE A SHOW THAT MAKES THEIR MONTH. BUT I HAVE A LOT OF HUGE GOALS. I LOWKEY AM ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO WANTS TO DO LITERALLY EVERYTHING. REACH  THE STARS AND THEN MORE, AND I WON’T STOP UNTIL I DO!

EJ: IF YOU COULD ACQUIRE ANOTHER ARTISTS’ ENTIRE DISCOGRAPHY, WHAT ARTIST WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

EMMY: OH MY GOD, THIS QUESTION IS SO HARD. I’M GONNA HAVE TO GO WITH AMY WINEHOUSE. I JUST THINK SHE’S A LYRICAL GENIUS WITH A VOICE THAT BRINGS YOU TO YOUR KNEES. THE WAY SHE  SANG WITH HER HEART, SOUL, AND BONES LITERALLY HELPED RAISE ME. ALSO, THE WAY SHE INFUSED REGGAE, FUNK, JAZZ, POP, DOO-WOP—JUST GENIUS.

EJ: YOUR SONG HAS ALREADY TAKEN THE WORLD BY STORM AND BECOME AN EMPOWERMENT ANTHEM… AND YOU MADE THE COMMENT THAT YOU “WRITE THE BEST SHIT WHEN YOU AREN’T TRYING…” WHAT WERE YOU THINKING ABOUT WHEN YOU WROTE THIS TRACK? HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL WHEN YOU SING IT?

EMMY:  WHEN I WROTE THIS TRACK I WAS THINKING ABOUT HOW AMAZING IT MADE ME FEEL TO SING IT- EVEN IF IT WAS JUST TO MYSELF. I  HOPED IT WOULD HELP HEAL PEOPLE THE WAY IT DID ME, EVEN IF IT  WAS JUST A FEW. I HAD NO IDEA IT WOULD ESSENTIALLY REACH THE  WHOLE WORLD. I’M MORE THAN HONORED AND MORE THAN  BLESSED. ALL I’VE EVER WANTED TO DO WAS MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND CHANGE THE WORLD. I REALLY HOPE THIS SONG HELPS DO THAT.

EJ: IS THERE ANYTHING, EITHER RELATED TO YOUR MUSIC OR IN YOUR HEART, THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THE CHANCE TO SAY NOW?

EMMY: I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU. FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. I  REALLY MEAN IT, EACH AND EVERY ONE OF MY SUPPORTERS I AM  FOREVER GRATEFUL FOR AND I PROMISE NOT TO LET Y’ALL DOWN. I  LOVE YOU AND YOU’VE CHANGED MY LIFE WHEN ALL I EVER  WANTED WAS TO CHANGE YOURS.
