EJ SAFTNER: HOW ARE YOU ALL TODAY? HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT RELEASE DAY TOMORROW?

JUICE: WE’RE GOOD! WE’VE BEEN WORKING TOWARDS THIS RELEASE FOR ALMOST A YEAR AND A HALF SO NEEDLESS TO SAY WE’RE QUITE GIDDY AT THE PROSPECT OF ITS ARRIVAL.  WE’VE ALSO PAIRED THE RELEASE WITH TWO OF OUR BIGGEST SHOWS TO DATE, ONE IN BOSTON, ONE IN NEW YORK, WHICH WE’VE ALSO BEEN REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR A WHILE.

EJ: WALK US THROUGH THE STORY OF “JUICE.” HOW DID YOU FORM AS A GROUP AND HOW HAS THE DYNAMIC CHANGED (OR NOT CHANGED) SINCE THAT TIME?

JUICE: WE STARTED AS FRIENDS AT UNIVERSITY.  WE STARTED OFF JUST PLAYING IN OUR DORM ROOMS… WRITING AND MESSING AROUND.  WE STARTED PLAYING AROUND THE BOSTON AREA AND WE’RE GLAD TO SEE HOW MUCH PEOPLE LATCHED ON TO WHAT WAS ALREADY BRINGING US SO MUCH JOY.  AFTER GRADUATION WE TOURED THE WHOLE COUNTRY ALMOST NON-STOP FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS WHICH SIMULTANEOUSLY BROUGHT US TOGETHER BUT WASN’T ALWAYS EASY.  WE OWE A LOT OF WHO WE ARE TODAY TO THAT TIME.

EJ: TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS. FROM AN EXTERNAL PERSPECTIVE, IT SEEMS THAT IT MAY BE COMPLICATED WITH SO MANY MEMBERS… IS THERE A ROUTINE FOR CREATING MUSIC OR IS IT INSPIRATION-BASED AND NATURALLY BALANCED?

JUICE: OUR CREATIVE PROCESS IS DEFINITELY INSPIRATION-BASED.  WITH SO MANY PEOPLE WRITING IN THE BAND IT CAN DEFINITELY FEEL CHAOTIC AT TIMES BUT I THINK WE HAVE DEVELOPED A SENSE FOR WHAT SOUNDS LIKE A “JUICE SONG” AND WE ALL KNOW THAT THAT’S NOT GOING TO BE THE CASE WITH EVERYTHING WE WRITE INDIVIDUALLY.  THERE’S DEFINITELY NO ROUTINE OR FORMULA BY WHICH OUR SONGS ARE DEVELOPED, WHICH MAKES EVERY SONG NEW AND EXCITING SO AT THE END OF THE DAY. IT’S DEFINITELY A BLESSING.

EJ: WHY THE NAME “BOY STORY,” AND HOW DOES YOUR BAND’S VISUAL AESTHETIC MATCH YOUR EVOLVING SOUND?

JUICE: WE’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT USING THE NAME “BOY STORY” SINCE BEFORE WE WERE EVEN WRITING A LOT OF THESE SONGS.  SOMETHING ABOUT THE IRONY AND FAMILIARITY WITH THE TITLE FIT WITH THE SONGS THAT WERE BEING WRITTEN.  THE VISUAL AESTHETIC AND MUSIC VIDEOS WERE, LIKE MANY OF THE SONGS ON THE PROJECT, OVER-EXAGGERATED AND STORY-BASED DEPICTIONS OF WHAT THE SONG WAS REPRESENTING.  ALTHOUGH THE STORY OF THE SONG AND THE STORY OF THE VIDEO OBVIOUSLY DONT ALWAYS LINE UP DIRECTLY, THEY ALLOWED US TO EXPAND ON THE ENERGY AND FEELING OF THE RECORDINGS.

EJ: THERE IS SO MUCH COMPLEXITY IN THE VARIATIONS OF YOUR SOUND – HOW DO YOU ALIGN WITH THE SIMPLICITY OF YOUR LOVE FOR MUSIC IN THAT JOURNEY?

JUICE: THE RECORDINGS ARE COMPLEX AND THE MESSAGE MULTI-FACETED… AND I THINK THAT ALIGNS A LOT WITH OUR COLLECTIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH MUSIC.

EJ: JUICE BOUNCES AND EXPERIMENTS WITH A VARIETY OF GENRES – ESPECIALLY WITHIN THIS NEW PROJECT. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE PROJECT THAT BRINGS IT BACK TO ONE COHESIVE UNIT? WAS THERE A FOCUSED MISSION WHEN CREATING “BOY STORY” OR DID YOU EMBRACE THE CHAOS OF EMOTION?

JUICE: HONESTLY IT ALL CAME DOWN TO WANTING TO CREATE GREAT SONGS.  GIVEN THAT THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE COMING FROM DIFFERENT POINTS OF INSPIRATION WE DEFINITELY EMBRACE THAT CHAOS OF EMOTION.  WE FOUND A WAY TO BRING ALL OF THAT TOGETHER TO TELL A COHESIVE STORY THAT REPRESENTS THE WHOLE BAND BUT FOR US THAT IS A VERY COMPLEX AND NUANCED MASHING OF PERSPECTIVES AND EXPERIENCES.

EJ: IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAY, REGARDING YOUR MUSIC OR SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO YOU ALL, THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THE CHANCE TO SAY NOW?

JUICE: WE’RE REALLY EXCITED FOR THIS PROJECT TO BE OUT AND THE PLACES IT WILL TAKE US.  IT’S NOT ONLY OUR BIGGEST WORK WE’VE EVER RELEASED BUT FEELS LIKE A CREATIVE BREAKTHROUGH BOTH NARRATIVELY AND SONICALLY.  WE CAN’T WAIT TO SEE WHAT THAT BRINGS AND WE HOPE YOU LIKE IT AS MUCH AS WE DO.

JUICE’S NEW PROJECT, “BOY STORY,” IS AVAILABLE ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2022. PRESAVE “BOY STORY” HERE.
