“YOU’RE NOT HARRY STYLES” // DYLAN (Q&A)

In a beaming array of pop, rock, and electric-infused melodies, Dylan reintroduces her style with her latest release, “You’re Not Harry Styles.” With the reminiscence of youthful exuberance, the singer-songwriter not-so-subtly shades an ex-lover with an impossible comparison – the one and only (and dreamy) Harry Styles.

The transfer of electric rhythm to the instrumental chorus, and then back again, gives audiences a rollercoaster to ride. Dylan embraces the self-deprecating lyrics with a keen sense of irony and sarcasm. She invites listeners to feel the angst alongside her, as the power behind the vocals requires to be sung with. With the chorus, “You think you can do better / Must have hit your head real hard when you fell from Heaven / Cause you’re not quite Harry Styles,” Dylan firmly puts this person in check. Yet, despite the rock ‘n’ roll angsty nature of the track, Dylan is making an arguable persuasion in favor of her creative artistry.

[Q&A]

EJ SAFTNER: HOW ARE YOU TODAY?

DYLAN: QUITE TIRED ACTUALLY. IN THE MIDDLE OF MY FIRST TOUR SUPPORTING THOMAS HEADON!

EJ: TELL ME ABOUT YOUR RECENT RELEASE. WHAT WAS THE WRITING PROCESS LIKE? WHAT INSPIRED IT? WALK US THROUGH THE CREATIVE PROCESS.

DYLAN: “YOU’RE NOT HARRY STYLES” WAS ACTUALLY ONE OF THE QUICKEST SONGS TO WRITE. I WROTE IT WITH KING ED AND ANYA JONES WHO ARE TWO OF MY FAVOURITE PEOPLE. IT WAS A VERY ENTERTAINING SESSION, I DEFINITELY DID NOT HOLD BACK IN THE LYRICS. FUN FACT… STRAIGHT AFTER THE SESSION, I GOT DUMPED. LOL.

EJ: IF YOU COULD PICK THREE FELLOW ARTISTS TO BE STUCK ON A DESERT ISLAND WITH, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?

DYLAN: PROBABLY LILY DENNING, AS SHE’S MY PARTNER IN CRIME. TAYLOR SWIFT, BECAUSE COME ON CAN’T BE WITHOUT THE QUEEN HERSELF, AND MAYBE CHRIS MARTIN, AS I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO WRITE A SONG WITH HIM.

EJ: WHAT ARTIST IMPACTED YOU THE MOST IN TERMS OF CREATING AND SUSTAINING AND EMOTIONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH MUSIC? WHO INSPIRES YOUR TECHNICAL STYLE AND PRODUCTION?

DYLAN: SONGWRITING WISE… THE LIKES OF KATY PERRY AND TAYLOR SWIFT. THEY’VE BOTH BEEN THROUGH IT AND WRITE SUCH INCREDIBLE STORYLINES WHILST MAKING THEM CATCHY AS HELL.

PRODUCTION-WISE, I SEEM TO ALWAYS REFERENCE CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN EVEN THOUGH MY MUSIC NEVER ENDS UP SOUNDING ANYTHING LIKE THEM.

EJ: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LINE YOU’VE WRITTEN? WHAT LINE OUT OF THE NEW SINGLE DO YOU HOPE GETS SUNG BACK TO YOU THE LOUDEST?

DYLAN: [MY] FAVOURITE LINE WOULD PROBABLY BE, “RUNNING AROUND WITH YOUR GOD COMPLEX / DO YOU PICTURE YOURSELF WHILE WE’RE HAVING SEX,” BECAUSE IT SOUNDS LIKE I’M TAKING THE PISS BUT IT WAS A VERY SERIOUS QUESTION. AND I’M HOPING THE TITLE, “YOU’RE NOT QUITE HARRY STYLES.”

EJ: YOUR SONG IS CALLED, “YOU’RE NOT HARRY STYLES,” BUT IF YOU WERE FOR A DAY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO FOR THE DAY?

DYLAN:  PLAY A GIG. IT WOULD BE SICK TO STAND IN FRONT OF HIS CROWD. THEY ARE AMAZING.

EJ: WHO IS YOUR DREAM COLLABORATOR?

DYLAN: FLUME. ALWAYS FLUME.

EJ: IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SAY, EITHER PERTAINING TO YOUR MUSIC OR SOMETHING CLOSE TO YOUR HEART, PLEASE TAKE THE TIME NOW. DYLAN: I GUESS THAT THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING. I’M WRITING A LOT AT THE MOMENT BECAUSE IT’S BEEN A VERY TOUGH SIX MONTHS FOR ME. SO I KNOW THAT THE MUSIC IS COMING FROM A VERY WEIRD PLACE IN MY MIND, AND I HOPE THAT IT HELPS PEOPLE.
