Ben Reilly / Maytag (Tax Free)

Hailing from Brownsville, Brooklyn and currently residing in Atlanta, rapper and multi-hyphenate creative Ben Reilly broke the internet this week with the sudden and unexpected virality of his 2021 release, “Maytag (Tax Free)”. Now occupying the #1 position on Spotify’s Viral 50 – USA rankings, it could not be further from reality to clump Ben Reilly and “Maytag” in with the myriad of overnight Tik Tok successes. Most elegantly phrased by the artist himself in response to trollish accusations of being an industry plant, Reilly simply stated, “photosynthesis”. One of the strongest independent efforts we have seen from an artist in recent times, Ben Reilly is truly getting it out the mud.

Laced throughout with idiosyncratic flow switch ups and the hard hitting instrumental exploits, “Maytag” takes listeners on a sonic journey through the distinctive lens of the young artist. As an avid consumer and historian of Hip-Hop and Rap, I can confidently say that, while his sound pays homage to contemporary legends, Ben has thoroughly developed and fleshed out a unique voice and sonic palette. Upon first listen, it was obvious to me that Reilly is an artist that has put in the hours to develop his craft, yet has a natural gift for storytelling and inherent spatial awareness of his voice within music.

Although “Maytag” is certainly a standout track from his debut album FREELANCE, the project offers an eclectic variety of songs that have the potential to appeal to a broad and diverse audience. Another personal favorite of mine off the album is “Townhouse”; a fun and bouncy slapper with a chorus that will make you run it back-to-back-to-back until you get where you’re going.

Given the way that Reilly has started off the year, his newly found fanbase can rest assured that the rest of 2022 is going to be a special year for the rising phenom.
