Wakai ft Emmavie / Starter Jacket

Checking back in from the Bayou with unquestionably the biggest record of his career is Louisiana’s Wakai, whom to my great fortune I just recently had the privilege of discovering. I immediately had to peruse the rest of the Baton Rouge emcee’s catalogue, only to find a kaleidoscope of dope songs. With Starter Jacket, assisted by UK songstress Emmavie, Wakai comes through with a warm song to get us through this last month of winter.

Utilizing off-timed, J-Dilla influenced percussion, with a perfect hint of esoteric synths that seem to escape every few kicks, Wakai invites you to the innermost confines of his mind, musing ambivalently on the concept of popularity. Emmavie also deserves some praise for her vocal work on this one. The duo blend together perfectly. Like honey in tea. The layers of vocal harmonies are phenomenal as well throughout.

If you’re late to the party like myself, fret not my friend! Wakai is just one click away.
