Returning to the release circle after sharing three singles and her first music video, Minneapolis-based rapper and songwriter Ricki Monique has blessed us with her newest offering, “Cereal”! In preparation for her debut EP, “Cereal” takes listeners on a soulful and introspective journey through the nuanced mind of the rising artist. Opening with soulful keys, Ricki creates an intimate setting for her listeners to settle in with her to a moment of vulnerability and honesty.
Seamlessly transitioning between flows while flexing her lyrical acumen, “Cereal” showcases exactly why here at Early Rising we believe Ricki Monique is one the most promising up and coming artists on the scene. Fusing elements of spoken word, jazz, hip-hop, and soul, Ricki creates an alternative sound that empowers storytelling and shows us her unique sonic affinity.
Reflecting on the song’s personal significance, Monique stated, “This song was created as a sonic affirmation to remind me that I was built to be great. I put affirmations from my mother and sisters on the hook and brought up feelings of depression and hardships in the first verse to portray a sense of everything-ness. I am both powerful and weak at times. I wrote this song to remind myself to lean into my strong parts.”
The juxtaposition created by Monique between peacefulness and powerfulness is furthered by the way producer MMYYKK contrasts soulful keys with trap drums. The track’s instrumentation compliments Ricki’s vocal tone and lyrics in a way that makes for a vivid and full feeling experience. Also teaming up with Minnesota/Atlanta-based creative and director Charles Fatunbi, Monique’s live performance adds a whole new dimension of depth and imagery to the song.
