GLOVE IS A FOUR-PIECE BAND, CONTEMPLATIVE AND DIVERSE IN THEIR PLAY AND PRODUCTION WITH GENRES. FROM ELECTRONIC AND SYNTHESIZED TO POP AND ACOUSTIC, THEIR EXPERIMENTAL ATTITUDE LEAVES AUDIENCES WITH A VARIETY OF EMOTIONS TO FULLY FEEL AND SINK INTO. THE BAND IS MADE UP OF ROD WENDT, BRIE DEUX, MICHELLE PRIMIANI, AND JUSTIN BURNS.

THEIR MOST RECENT ALBUM, “BOOM NIGHTS,” IS AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE.

EJ SAFTNER: HOW ARE YOU TODAY?

ROD: DOING VERY WELL, IT’S GOOD TO BE HOME. FINALLY.

BRIE: BACK ON THE GRIND AT HOME. THOUGHT WE’D GET A BREAK FOR THE MONTH BUT, YOU KNOW, WHEN WE’RE BACK HERE WE ARE FIGURING OUT THE NEXT TOUR AND EVERYTHING… THINKING. IT FEELS GOOD TO BE HERE. GETTING A LITTLE BREAK.

EJ: SO YOU ARE CURRENTLY ON YOUR HEADLINE TOUR RIGHT NOW, GIVE US A LIFE UPDATE. WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE CHALLENGES ON THE ROAD AND WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE MOST REWARDING MOMENTS?

BRIE: I THINK IT WAS ALL REWARDING. ON THIS TOUR, WE DIDN’T PLAY A BAD SHOW… THEY WERE ALL GOOD ROOMS WITH GREAT PEOPLE. WE WERE ON TOUR WITH THIS BAND CALLED NATION OF LANGUAGE AND THEY ARE THE DEAREST FRIENDS OF OURS. THEY ARE SO SWEET, WE LOVE THEIR MUSIC. THEIR CROWD REFLECTS THAT… SO WE HAD REALLY GOOD CROWDS. WE REALLY ENJOYED OURSELVES. THE ONLY EXHAUSTING PART WAS THE DRIVES. THE WEST COAST IS SO LONG AND STRETCHED OUT, I THINK THAT WAS THE HARDEST PART. IT WAS SO LONG AND SO TAXING.

ROD: YEAH, I’D SAY THE MOST CHALLENGING PART WAS DEFINITELY THE DRIVES.

BRIE: LIKE, THE DIFFERENT CLIMATES AND TERRAINS. I FEEL LIKE WE HIT SO MANY DIFFERENT ONES. ONCE WE HIT TEXAS, EVERYTHING JUST STARTED CHANGING LIKE EVERY OTHER STATE… SO, YOU KNOW. OUR ALLERGIES WENT CRAZY.

EJ: GLOVE IS DESCRIBED AS AN ALT-POP-ROCK SYNTHESIZED GROUP… A CONGLOMERATE OF GENRES. WITHOUT USING A GENRE, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE FEELING OF GLOVE AND WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU?

ROD: UM.. I THINK IT’S EVERYTHING YOU SAID. WE DEFINITELY LIKE… WE’RE ON A POP KICK LATELY.

BRIE: NO GENRES. NO GENRES.

ROD: IT IS HARD TO SAY BECAUSE YOU KNOW, WE’VE BEEN PLAYING THESE SONGS FOR A WHILE, AND THEN WE ARE ALSO GOING, I FEEL, IN A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT DIRECTION WITH MORE SYNTHESIZERS ON THE NEXT ALBUM. YEAH.

BRIE: I WOULD SAY, EVOLVING IS A GOOD WORD. I FEEL WE’RE ALWAYS TRYING TO EVOLVE WITH WHAT WE’RE FEELING AT THE MOMENT. WE ALWAYS WANT TO LEARN MORE AND TRY MORE THINGS SO I THINK CONSISTENTLY EVOLVING AND ALSO DANCING… ALL OF THOSE THINGS DEFINE GLOVE.

ROD: YEAH, WE LIKE DANCE MUSIC.

EJ: YOUR GROUP IS UNIQUE IN THAT THERE IS NOT ONE PARTICULAR FRONT ARTIST, RATHER, YOU MOVE AS AN ECLECTIC UNIT AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER’S SPECIALTIES AND SOUNDS. TELL ME ABOUT THE CREATION OF GLOVE AND HOW THAT QUALITY PLAYS A ROLE IN THE DYNAMIC?

ROD: WELL, THE BAND STARTED AND IT WAS ME, BRIE, AND MICHELLE, AND IT KIND OF CAME OFF OF A PREVIOUS PROJECT. IT STARTED FROM THERE. WHEN WE FIRST STARTED, WE HAD A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT VISION OF THE SOUND OF THE BAND. I THINK IT WAS MORE ACOUSTICALLY TREATED IN TERMS OF LEAD GUITAR, DRUM, BASS… AND THE SYNTH WOULD BE THE LAST THING ON IT. THEN JUSTIN CAME INTO PLAY, WHAT? A YEAR…

BRIE: A YEAR AFTER WE WERE PLAYING TOGETHER, YEAH.

ROD: I THINK WE KIND OF TOOK A LITTLE TURN AND STARTED MESSING AROUND EVEN MORE WITH MORE ELECTRONIC MUSIC AND SYNTHESIZERS AND DRUM MACHINES AND STUFF LIKE THAT. THAT WAS ABOUT HOW I FEEL… I FEEL LIKE WHEN JUSTIN JOINED THE BAND THAT’S WHEN WE WROTE ALL THESE SONGS THAT WE RELEASED. SO, IT WAS A SLIGHTLY LONGER PROCESS THAN OTHER BANDS. TOOK A WHILE TO GET IT RECORDED AND EVERYTHING… WE WERE PLAYING THESE SONGS FOR A WHILE BEFORE WE EVEN RECORDED DEMOS. I THINK WE WENT ON A COUPLE OF TOURS WITHOUT EVEN HAVING ANYTHING RECORDED REALLY.

BRIE: I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO SAY THAT WHEN JUSTIN JOINED… ROD ALWAYS WANTED NOT TO BE THE ONLY SINGER. HE LOVED THE JOINT VOCALS AND SWITCHING OFF. I FEEL LIKE FROM DAY ONE THAT’S WHAT WE WERE ALWAYS GOING FOR. FROM THERE, THINGS KEPT EVOLVING AND I STARTED SINGING MORE AND HAVING MORE INPUT WITH VOCAL STUFF. SO THAT JUST HELPED THE ROTATION OF THINGS. YEAH.

ROD: I FEEL LIKE THE WHOLE THING WITH HAVING DIFFERENT SINGERS ON EACH SONG, IT ALSO CAME KIND OF NATURAL. THERE ARE TIMES WE’VE TRIED SONGS WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND IT DIDN’T WORK.

BRIE: IT’S WHATEVER WORKS FOR THE SONG AND FEELS RIGHT AT THE END OF THE DAY. ALSO, WHEN WE FORMED THIS GROUP, WE CAME FROM ANOTHER GROUP AND WE KNEW WE WANTED EVERYONE TO BE INVOLVED AND INVESTED IN IT. THAT WAS SUPER IMPORTANT. I FEEL LIKE IF YOU HAVE ONE DEAD WEIGHT IT REALLY DRAGS YOU. SO WE WANTED EVERYONE TO BE INVOLVED IN SOME SORT OF WAY AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE GROUP. WHETHER IT BE MUSICALLY, GRAPHICALLY… WE WANTED EVERYONE TO PLAY THEIR PART.

EJ: LET’S TALK ABOUT “BOOM NIGHTS.” WALK ME THROUGH THE IDEAL FEELING YOU WISH AUDIENCES FEEL WHEN EXPERIENCING THIS COLLECTION OF MUSIC.

ROD: I THINK THAT WE WOULD ALL AGREE THAT WE HOPE THEY ARE EXPERIENCING CHANGE WITHIN THE RECORD. IT’S NOT TOO DRAMATIC, LIKE SONG BY SONG, YEAH… SOME OF THE SONGS ARE MORE ELECTRONIC THAN OTHERS, SOME ARE MORE OF A BAND SETUP, BUT THEY ALL COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER IN A WAY… IT ALL COMES FROM THE SAME KIND OF PLACE ANYWAY.

I THINK THE EXPERIENCE, IT REFLECTS CHANGE…

BRIE: LIKE CHANGING EMOTION, I FEEL LIKE EACH SONG CAN LEAD TO A DIFFERENT EMOTION THAT YOU ARE HAVING, I FEEL LIKE THAT FEELS RIGHT. THE SONGS WERE WRITTEN SO NATURALLY, WE DIDN’T THINK TOO HARD ABOUT IT. IT’S JUST WHAT CAME AND THAT’S JUST LIKE THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE. I HOPE IT CAN REFLECT DIFFERENT EMOTIONS.

EJ: IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE ONE SOLO ARTIST TO JOIN GLOVE, SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE (DEAD OR ALIVE), WHO WOULD IT BE?

BRIE: SHOULD WE SHOUT IT AT THE SAME TIME? TO SEE IF IT’S THE SAME OR NOT…

ROD: YOU GO FIRST…

BRIE: BRIAN ENO.

ROD: OH, YES, YES, YES.

BRIE: WERE YOU GOING TO SAY THE SAME THING? I DON’T KNOW.

ROD: I WOULD SAY SOMEONE… HMM… SEE, I WAS THINKING BRIAN ENO TOO BECAUSE HE’S A GREAT PRODUCER AND A GREAT SONGWRITER. HE WOULD BE GREAT ON BOTH. I DON’T KNOW… SOMEONE LIKE BOWIE? HE’S ONE OF MY FAVORITES. OR GARY NUMAN.

BRIE: I THINK BOWIE AND ENO WOULD MAKE A GREAT PAIR TO JOIN…

ROD: AND THEY ALREADY KNOW EACH OTHER SO.

EJ: WHAT IS COMING UP FOR GLOVE? WHAT CAN WE LOOK OUT FOR?

ROD: SO WE GOT TOUR, ANOTHER TOUR.

BRIE: LOTS OF TOURS.

ROD: COME AND SEE US LIVE, I THINK THAT’S THE BEST FOR THE BAND. IF YOU CAN AFFORD TO BUY ANYTHING FROM US…

BRIE: YEAH, THE RECORD WILL BE PRESSED SOON. SO HOPEFULLY, IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS, THAT WILL BE AVAILABLE. FOR BOOM NIGHTS.

ROD: YEAH, I THINK JUST LISTEN TO THE RECORD AND COME TO THE SHOW. I KNOW PEOPLE HAVE BUSY DAYS SO…

BRIE: YEAH, WE’RE ROAD DOGS SO WE’LL BE OUT ON THE ROAD.

ROD: WE HAVE A TOUR COMING UP IN MAY WITH A BAND CALLED A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS. THEY ARE OUT OF NEW YORK. WE’RE NOT A U.S. TOUR WITH THEM.

BRIE: AND CANADA. IT’S OUR FIRST TIME IN CANADA SO IF YOU’RE IN CANADA, PLEASE COME TO OUR FIRST SHOW THERE. IT WILL BE GREAT.

ROD: YEAH, WE’RE WORKING ON NEW STUFF TOO. DEMOING A NEW RECORD TO HOPEFULLY BE RECORDED THIS YEAR. AND THEN WE HAVE SOME DATES LATER IN THE YEAR BUT FOR NOW, THAT’S ABOUT IT. THE NEXT TOUR COMING UP…

BRIE: IT’S GOING TO BE A BIG ONE, SO WE’D LOVE TO SEE [YOU].

ROD: WE’RE GOING EVERYWHERE.

EJ: IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAY, EITHER PERTAINING TO MUSIC OR SOMETHING CLOSE TO YOUR HEART, THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THE CHANCE TO SAY NOW?

ROD: I’LL LET BRIE ANSWER THAT ONE.

BRIE: UM.. BOOM NIGHTS, BABY!

ROD: WE JUST ASK TO PUT IT OUT THERE. LISTEN TO THE RECORD. THAT’S ALL WE CAN ASK FOR, FOR THE BAND. IT’S ALL WE WANT, REALLY.

BRIE: BOOM NIGHTS, BABY. I FEEL LIKE THAT’S THE QUOTE.
