EARLY TALKS W/ BETWEEN FRIENDS

EJ SAFTNER: HOW ARE YOU TODAY? HOW HAVE YOU BEEN?

SAVANNAH HUDSON: OH, WE’RE DOING WELL. WE’VE BEEN SO LIKE NONSTOP FOR THE PAST COUPLE MONTHS, JUST BECAUSE WE’VE HAD A RELEASE EVERY MONTH, SO IT DOESN’T REALLY GIVE YOU ROOM TO KIND OF STOP FOR ANY SECOND. IT WAS JUST MY BIRTHDAY SO WE HAD LIKE THE WEEKEND TO KIND OF DECOMPRESS… HANG OUT AND GET SOME SUN. THEN GO RIGHT BACK IN BECAUSE WE HAVE A RELEASE ON HIS [BRANDON’S] BIRTHDAY, SO IT’S JUST LIKE RIGHT BACK INTO IT. BUT, IT’S WHAT WE LOVE, IT’S BEEN SUPER FUN, SO WE’RE GOOD.

EJ: SO THIS IS A SIBLING DUO, TELL ME ABOUT YOUR MUSIC DISCOVERY AS INDIVIDUALS AND HOW IT CONTRIBUTES TO BRINGING YOUR OWN STYLES TO YOUR COLLABORATION.

BRANDON HUDSON: I FEEL LIKE SAV AND I ALWAYS KIND OF WORKED ON THE SAME WAVELENGTH, IF THAT MAKES SENSE. I FEEL LIKE GROWING UP, ALWAYS INTERESTED IN MUSIC AND FASHION AND ART AND VIDEOS, AND WE ALWAYS LIKE THE SAME THINGS AND SO THAT WAS ALWAYS KIND OF EASY MAKING OUR OWN PRODUCT BECAUSE WE LIKE SIMILAR THINGS, YOU KNOW? WHAT I WILL SAY ON THE FRONT OF CREATING, WE WERE BOTH KIND OF GOOD AT DIFFERENT THINGS WHEN WE WERE YOUNGER. THAT HELPED OUT A LOT BECAUSE WE COULD TEACH EACH OTHER THOSE THINGS AND THEN THAT ALLOWED US TO KIND OF GO TO THE NEXT STAGE AS AN ARTIST.

SAVANNAH: BUT I THINK WITH THE ASPECT OF LIKE LEARNING ABOUT MUSIC AND FINDING MUSIC THAT WE BOTH LIKE…  IT WAS ALWAYS KIND OF… IT STILL IS KIND OF A CHALLENGE BETWEEN OUR FRIENDSHIP OF LIKE, ‘I DISCOVERED THIS AND I CAN’T WAIT TO SHOW IT TO YOU,’ AND HIM KIND OF DISCOVERING SOMETHING AND SHOWING IT TO ME… WE’RE CONSTANTLY BROADENING EACH OTHER‘S BRAINS AND MUSIC TASTE AND THINGS THAT WE LIKE AND WE JUST FEED OFF OF EACH OTHER WHEN IT COMES TO THAT AND I THINK, UNINTENTIONALLY, IT IMPACTS IMPACTS OUR MUSIC AND THE THINGS THAT WE DO, SO IT’S FUN.

BRANDON: I REMEMBER WHEN WE WERE KIDS, WE WOULD SORT OF LIKE GATEKEEP OUR PERSONAL PLAYLISTS BECAUSE WE DIDN’T WANT EACH OTHER TO STEAL THAT PLAYLIST, YOU KNOW.

SAVANNAH: SO FRUSTRATING.

BRANDON: SO, IT’S ALWAYS BEEN IMPORTANT FOR US TO DISCOVER NEW GENRES AND I THINK ONCE WE LIKE GET INTO A NEW GENRE, ONCE WE DISCOVER SOMETHING WE REALLY LIKE, WE DIVE INTO IT AND WANT TO LEARN ALL ABOUT IT AND IT’S A… YEAH, I DON’T KNOW, WE DIG, WE DIG ALL THE TIME AND SHARE WITH EACH OTHER.

EJ: FASHION AND INTENTIONAL AESTHETIC SEEM TO BE A MASSIVE DRAW IN YOUR CREATIVITY AND IN YOUR MUSIC – TELL ME ABOUT THE OTHER CREATIVE OUTLETS THAT INFLUENCE YOUR SONIC STYLES?

SAVANNAH: ALL OF IT, OBVIOUSLY, AS HE SAID, GOES TOWARD THE SAME THING BUT I THINK YOU KNOW OUR LOVE FOR FILM AND CLOTHING AND IN FASHION AND MOVIES AND POSTERS AND THINGS AND OTHER ARTISTS… LIKE IT ALL IS A FORM. IT’S LIKE THE MAIN FORM OF JUST EXPRESSION AND EXPRESSING YOURSELF AND AND I THINK THAT WE LOVE TO JUST BE OURSELVES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE WHICH IS SOMETHING THAT WE’RE VERY FORTUNATE TO SAY, BUT I JUST THINK THAT WE FEEL SO COMFORTABLE JUST BEING OURSELVES AND WE LOVE TO JUST EXPLORE THAT. WHETHER IT COMES TO LIKE LIKING A MOVIE THAT NO ONE‘S EVER HEARD OF OR THAT NO ONE LIKES, OR LIKING A HAT THAT’S A TULIP, LIKE JUST THINGS THAT MAKE US FEEL LIKE WE’RE EXPRESSING OURSELVES. I THINK IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO US AND I THINK THAT THAT’S HOW IT SHOULD BE PORTRAYED IN LIFE… BECAUSE WHY NOT JUST BE YOURSELF?

BRANDON: I THINK ALSO, YOU KNOW WHEN WE WERE KIDS, ALL OF THOSE DIFFERENT AVENUES OF CREATIVITY… WE NEVER HAD A PLACE TO PUT ALL OF THOSE IDEAS. WHEN WE STARTED BETWEEN FRIENDS, THE IDEA WAS BASICALLY FOR IT TO JUST BE AN UMBRELLA FOR ALL THINGS THAT WE WANT TO DO. SO, BASICALLY, OVER THE PAST COUPLE YEARS WITH THIS PROJECT, WE’VE SORT OF JUST DONE WHATEVER WE WANTED UNDER THAT UMBRELLA… WHICH IS SO GREAT BECAUSE WE WANT TO CONTINUE CREATING IN SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS AND HAVING THAT ROOF, OR LIKE A HOUSE TO BUILD WITH IT, IS A REALLY NICE FEELING.

SAVANNAH: AND, I WILL THROW IT OUT THERE, JUST SO THAT IN CASE PEOPLE DON’T KNOW, LIKE, IT HASN’T ALWAYS BEEN THAT WAY AND I THINK THAT WE FEEL SUPER LUCKY THAT WE ARE FINALLY ABLE TO EXPRESS OURSELVES AND TO MAKE THE MUSIC THAT WE WANT TO MAKE AND BE THE PEOPLE THAT WE TRULY ARE. BUT, I CAN SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE WHO AREN’T AWARE OF OUR HISTORY OF DOING THIS FOR SO LONG, JUST SINCE WE WERE KIDS, LIKE, IT WASN’T ALWAYS THE CASE AND I THINK IT’S SICK THAT WE CAN FINALLY, AS ADULTS, DO LIKE YOU SAID BEFORE…  LIKE THAT YOU [EJ] GET TO DO YOUR JOB EVERY DAY, AND YOU LOVE IT, LIKE, THAT’S KIND OF HOW WE FEEL AS WELL.

BRANDON: YEAH, DEFINITELY.

EJ: LET’S TALK ABOUT “LAUREL.” TELL ME THE STORY OF THE TRACK.

BRANDON: SO LAUREL…

SAVANNAH: THIS TRACK HAS HAD MANY LIVES.

BRANDON: YEAH, WHEN WE STARTED WORKING ON ‘LAUREL,’ I THINK IT WAS STILL THE PANDEMIC.

SAVANNAH: IT WAS A DEEP PANDEMIC AND IT WAS LIKE, WE DIDN’T THINK IT WAS GONNA BE A POSSIBILITY FOR THIS EP, KNOW BUT THEN WE JUST HAD A DAY IN THE STUDIO, I WORKED ON IT AND IT JUST WAS SO… WE WERE LIKE, ‘THIS IS GOT TO BE IT.’

BRANDON: FUN FACT…  IT WAS ORIGINALLY CALLED, ‘OLIVIA,’ AND IT HAD A WHOLE DIFFERENT CONCEPT AND WHEN WE WERE IN THE PANDEMIC, JUST SPENDING ALL OUR TIME IN THE STUDIO WORKING ON MUSIC, WE STARTED TO LIKE CHALLENGE OURSELVES WITH IDEAS AND MORE LIKE, WHAT ARE UNCOMFORTABLE FEELINGS THAT WE HAVEN’T ADDRESSED BEFORE AND LIKE, HOW DO WE DO THAT? BUT, IN A WAY THAT STILL SOUNDS LIKE COLORFUL, HAPPY, BETWEEN FRIENDS… AND WE JUST DECIDED TO LIKE WRITE A SONG REFLECTING ON OUR RELATIONSHIP THAT SORT OF WENT BAD. LIKE, WHEN YOU DRIVE PAST THAT PERSON’S STREET. I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE CAN SORT OF UNDERSTAND THAT FEELING, EVEN YEARS AFTER SOMETHING, WHEN YOU’RE LIKE GOING PAST THAT PERSON‘S HOUSE SO LIKE YOU SEE ANY SORT OF MEMORY OF YOUR PAST, THERE’S LIKE THIS FEELING IN YOUR STOMACH… IT KIND OF SUCKS. THAT SONG IS KIND OF ABOUT THAT.

SAVANNAH:  I FEEL LIKE WE ALSO TWISTED IT IN A WAY WHERE IT WAS PRESENTING THE CHALLENGING FEELING OF POSSIBLY ASKING THAT PERSON TO CHANGE THEIR MIND…

BRANDON: OR IF THERE WAS LIKE, IF THERE IS A CHANCE

SAVANNAH: IF THERE WAS A CHANCE… AND TELLING HIM THAT THERE WAS A CHANCE THAT THEY COULD, BUT THAT THEY SHOULD. I’M JUST NOT THE TYPE THAT LIKE REALLY … SOMETIMES, A SONG WILL GET ME BUT I’M NOT THE TYPE THAT HOLDS ONTO THESE SORT OF LIKE HEARTBREAK SONGS SUPER CLOSELY UNLESS THERE’S SOME SORT OF LIKE…

BRANDON: OR THINGS THAT ARE TOO STRAIGHTFORWARD…

SAVANNAH: YEAH, STRAIGHTFORWARD.

BRANDON: I THINK THAT’S THE THING IN THE SONG IS, SAV AND I TRIED WRITING FROM BOTH PERSPECTIVES SO AT THE END OF THE SONG HER GANG VOCAL BIT AT THE OUTRO IS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE PERSON THAT I’M SINGING TO THE WHOLE TIME. I THINK IT’S REALLY COOL BECAUSE THAT IS SOMETHING THAT WE HAVEN’T REALLY TRIED BEFORE.

SAVANNAH:  I THINK WE TRY TO CHALLENGE PERSPECTIVE WRITING. LIKE, I LOVE TO WRITE FROM A PERSPECTIVE OF LIKE A MAN AND SING TO A GIRL, BUT OTHER PEOPLE DON’T RECEIVE IT LIKE THAT. I DON’T KNOW, I THINK WHEN YOU PLAY WITH PERSPECTIVES, IT MAKES THE WRITING MORE INTERESTING AND IT COULD OPEN UP THE OTHER FEELINGS OF PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST LISTENING TO IT.

BRANDON: YEAH I THINK THAT WAS A BIG PART OF ‘CUTIE,’ TOO. I FEEL LIKE WHEN WE STARTED THIS EP… WE KNEW IT WAS LIKE OUR NEXT CHAPTER AND WE WANTED TO WRITE FROM DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES AND BECOME DIFFERENT CHARACTERS. I THINK EVEN THE TITLE OF “CUTIE” IS THIS ALTERNATE PERSONA THAT SAV AND I HAVE CHANNELED.

SAVANNAH:  I THINK THE MAIN POINT OF IT IS JUST THAT WE JUST WANTED TO CHALLENGE OURSELVES AS CREATORS AND PUT NO BOUNDARIES ON EACH SONG AND SEE WHERE THAT TOOK US.

BRANDON: AND I THINK THAT THAT’S DRAMATIC… IT’S A DRAMATIC ANSWER TO IT A SONG THAT’S LIKE ESSENTIALLY A MINUTE, 59…

SAVANNAH: THIS ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION IS JUST A PERSONALITY PIECE IN ITSELF… AND TOUCHING ON THE WHOLE FEMALE PERSPECTIVE THING, I HAVE HAD MANY FRIENDS COMMENT ON MY PERSONALITY BEING LIKE, ‘YOU CALL EVERYTHING TO HER,’ LIKE, ‘SHE’S OVER THERE,’ OR LIKE, ‘SHE’S CUTE,’ OR LIKE, ‘OH, WHO IS THAT THAT’S HER.’ I WRITE LIKE THAT AS WELL. SO, I HOPE THAT LIKE THE LADIES FEEL THE LOVE ON A LOT OF THE MUSIC THAT IS SAYING ‘HER.’

EJ: WHAT IS THE FIRST QUESTION YOU ASK WHEN YOU FIND A NEW ARTIST YOU THINK YOU LIKE?

SAVANNAH: ACTUALLY, IT’S FUNNY THAT YOU’RE ASKING THIS BECAUSE THIS SORT OF THING HAPPENED TO ME RECENTLY IN A NEW WAY. IT’S HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE WITH OLDER ARTISTS OR WITH ARTIST TODAY I HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO WATCH THE RISE OF, IT’S LIKE WITH ARTIST I’VE THAT HAVE JUST BEEN HUGE MY WHOLE LIFE, BUT IT HAPPENED TO ME RECENTLY. WHEN I LISTENED TO THE NEW ROSALIA ALBUM, IT WAS SO CHALLENGING AS A LISTENER, IN THE BEST WAY, AND I THINK FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A MINUTE, HEARING SOMETHING NEW LIKE THAT CHALLENGED MY THOUGHT PROCESS OF LISTENING TO MUSIC. MY THOUGHT WAS LIKE, ‘HOW DID SHE THINK OF THIS?’ I THINK THAT THAT WAS THE FIRST THING THAT POPPED IN MY HEAD… LIKE, I WONDER WHAT SHE WAS THINKING WHEN SHE MADE THIS? I TRIED TO KIND OF LIKE IMAGINE HER IN THE STUDIO AND THEN WATCHED A BUNCH OF VIDEOS OF HER.

BRANDON: I THINK THE FIRST THING I THINK ABOUT IS, WHAT IS THIS KIND OF COMING FROM?’ YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? LIKE, WHERE IS IT COMING FROM…

SAVANNAH: AND ALSO, IT’S ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW, HE HAS THE PERSPECTIVE OF A PRODUCER BRAIN OF LIKE, ‘OKAY, SHE WAS SUPER INSPIRED BY SAMPLING.” I’M THINKING LIKE, ‘OKAY, HOW THE FUCK IS SHE GOING TO DO, LIKE, THIS WHOLE JAZZ THING IN THE MIDDLE OF LIKE A SONG THAT SOUNDS LIKE TOKYO DRIFT?’

BRANDON: YEAH SAV ASKS, ‘WHERE DID THIS COME FROM?’

SAVANNAH:  HE [BRANDON] IS A SUPER REALIST IN THE SENSE OF, ‘THIS IS A SAMPLE FROM SOMETHING,’ AND I’M JUST LIKE, ‘SHE’S A GENIUS AND SHE JUST CREATED THAT.’

BRANDON:  BUT I AGREE WITH THAT. I AGREE WITH THAT, I JUST LIKE FOR ME, AS A CREATOR, IN ORDER TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO THAT WITH US, I WANT TO KNOW HOW IT CAME ABOUT. THAT’S HOW WE ARE.

EJ: HOW WOULD YOU ANSWER THE QUESTION IF YOU WERE SOMEONE’S NEW ARTIST?

SAVANNAH: OKAY, SO I LIKE THIS QUESTION. I LIKE TO BE EXTREMELY HONEST, I HOPE AND I KNOW IT’S TRUE FOR SOME OF OUR FANS, BUT I HOPE THAT PEOPLE THAT LISTEN TO OUR MUSIC THINK ABOUT IT IN A VERY DETAILED WAY… ABOUT WHY WE DO THINGS AND HOW WE DO THEM, BECAUSE WE PUT SO MUCH EFFORT INTO THE DETAILS OF THINGS. LIKE, WHETHER IT’S TYING LYRICS IN WITH THE FIRST SONG AND THE LAST ON A RECORD, OR TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING THAT WE WILL THEN TALK ABOUT IN THE FUTURE, OR MAKING A MUSIC VIDEO AND IT BEING AN EPISODE OF SOMETHING, THEN THE NEXT ONE BEING THE SECOND EPISODE OF SOMETHING DIFFERENT. LIKE, WE THINK ALMOST TOO MUCH ABOUT DETAILS IN OUR PROJECT. WE ARE JUST SUPER DETAIL-ORIENTED PEOPLE. SO, I THINK WHEN I STEP BACK, MY BIGGEST HOPE, ALONG WITH JUST PEOPLE LIKING THE MUSIC AND US, IS THAT THERE’S LIKE SOME KIND OF REDDIT ACCOUNTS ABOUT IT… DISSECTING WHAT WE WERE THINKING BECAUSE THAT’S MY FAVORITE THING TO DO

B – YEAH I AGREE. I WOULD SAY DANCE IN MY OWN QUESTION, ABOUT LIKE, HOW DOES THIS EXIST, I THINK THEY WERE PRETTY SOLID EXAMPLES OF LIKE GEN-Z KIDS THAT GREW UP WITH THE INTERNET. LIKE REALLY, I THINK THAT THAT’S A SOLID EXAMPLE. LIKE OBVIOUSLY, WHEN YOU LISTEN TO OUR MUSIC, SONICALLY, IT BOUNCES AROUND FROM SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS AND I THINK THAT THAT COMES FROM THE ADD OF OUR GENERATION AND HOW FAST WE CONSUME. YOU HEAR THINGS AND SNIPPETS AND I WANT TO HEAR SOMETHING DIFFERENT, I THINK THAT WE CREATE IN THAT SAME WAY BECAUSE THAT’S JUST HOW WE GREW UP. IT’S WHAT WE KNOW. I THINK WE’RE DEFINITELY PRODUCTS OF GROWING UP WITH, YOU KNOW, YOUTUBE AND GARAGE BAND AND HAVING ALL THAT AT THE TIP OF OUR FINGERS. BECAUSE THAT’S HOW WE STARTED THIS ANYWAY, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? LIKE, I REMEMBER WHEN WE STARTED BETWEEN FRIENDS… IN THE BEGINNING, I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT PRODUCING MUSIC. WE’VE BEEN IN SO MANY SESSIONS BEFORE, WE’VE WRITTEN SO MUCH MUSIC, WE NEVER PRODUCED MUSIC. THEN, ALL OF A SUDDEN, WE’RE WATCHING TUTORIALS AND WE KNEW WHAT WE WANTED SOMETHING TO SOUND LIKE AND THEN WE COULD LIKE JUST MAKE IT ARE ON OUR OWN, WITHOUT ANYBODY. YEAH, I THINK THAT’S A GOOD ANSWER OF LIKE, HOW IT EXISTS, BECAUSE THAT’S THE TRUTH.

WHAT IS COMING UP FOR BETWEEN FRIENDS? HOW CAN WE SUPPORT?

SAVANNAH: WE HAVE A LOT, WE HAVE A LOT OF EXCITING THINGS COMING UP

BRANDON: WERE PLAYING A SHOW WITH HALSEY ON JUNE 8. WE’RE EXCITED ABOUT THAT, WE’RE PLAYING GOVERNORS BALL MUSIC FESTIVAL IN NEW YORK ON JUNE 10, AND THAT’S THE SAME DAY THE EP COMES OUT, WHICH WE’RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT.

SAVANNAH: AND THEN POSSIBLY A LITTLE FALL TOUR. NOTHING ANNOUNCED YET BUT IT’S IN THE WORKS AND WE’RE REALLY REALLY EXCITED.

BRANDON: WE ALREADY STARTED WORKING ON OUR NEXT THING…

SAVANNAH: WE HAVE VIDEOS COMING, MERCH COMING, CLOTHES COMING, TOUR COMING … JUST ALL OF THE THINGS.

BRANDON: ALL THE THINGS.

EJ: IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE, EITHER ABOUT MUSIC OR SOMETHING CLOSE TO YOUR HEART, THAT YOU WANT TO SAY NOW?

SAVANNAH: I THINK WE’VE KIND OF SAID EVERYTHING THAT WE CARE ABOUT. NO, FOR REAL, WE FEEL REALLY LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO MAKE THE ART THAT WE WANNA MAKE, AND DO THE THINGS THAT WE DO EVERY DAY. WE TELL EACH OTHER ALL THE TIME THAT IT’S SO CRAZY THAT WE JUST GET TO WAKE UP AND MAKE ART WITH EACH OTHER. WE’RE GRATEFUL FOR THE PEOPLE THAT LIKE IT AND WE HOPE THAT WE CONTINUE TO MAKE THOSE PEOPLE HAPPY.

BRANDON: DEFINITELY.
