Los Angeles-based Chinese American singer-songwriter Emei just blessed our ears with her latest musical offering, “That Girl.” Leaked by Emei the day after the song was written, “That Girl” accumulated over 13k pre-saves and large amounts of anticipation for its release date…and now it’s finally here.
“That Girl” is a catchy pop-rock-inspired track that combines cheeky brutally honest lyricism with a 90’s electric-guitar-driven soundscape. Relatable yet angsty, this track is the perfect song to belt out at the top of your lungs shamelessly.
When asked about the inspiration behind the track, Emei shared, “‘That Girl’ was written on a whim after weeks of trying to keep a habit checklist and failing miserably. The pop rock inspired anthem encapsulates the energy of wanting so badly to be that girl who wakes up at 6 AM, goes on walks every morning, and drinks coffee black but never getting to that unattainable goal.”
Through this track, Emei subverts the “it-girl” tradition, aka the one you’ve likely seen on your TikTok For You Page, and instead offers her own version of this ideal, one that’s far more accessible and attainable.
